Managed to get the first flight in of the year this morning.
Late start to the flying season, but all went well.
Airplane first flew in 91, has over 800 hrs. I am busy with other stuff and have other airplanes so the hrs are a little low, but, 150 mph , 3400 rpm, 4 GPH.
Really nice little airplane------- Life is good--------- Chris

FOD 2024:
Hopefully this will reach both lists. Q & DF.
As mentioned earlier, the FOD will be 5,6,7,8 Sept. at KDEH.
Rooms have been negotiated by Sanjay at the Borders in Waukon, IA. phone number is 563-568-2220.
Room rate 99+tx/ night. Ask for the "Quickie FOD airplane gathering” rate.
Cancelation policy is 24 hours before checkin time. Sanjay will attempt to get
this changed if he can, in a couple of weeks, when the Manager gets back from vacation.
Sanjay told them 5-10 rooms would be needed. They were ok with that.
So get your reservations made. Choose someone to bunk with.
Tune up your engines. Make sure parts don’t fall off. Dave, Roddy?
Be there or you WILL be talked about.
Get your plane out of hawk, Alan?
Fly in, in the farthest deviation from plans. Jon?
Ok, enough said. See ya there.

Chris, I also see that this should not be extended and I will probably do as you say for now.
The others say that they solved it in some way, but no one says exactly how and attaches any pictures.
Greetings and thank you for your opinion.V V pon., 26. feb. 2024 ob 18:18 je oseba Dorothea Keats <dkeats@...> napisala: -

Miran------------ You simply can't extend the spring. It needs to be built as one.
As was mentioned , the spring will be more rigid when shortened, but I would go with the shorter spring before attempting something else. Just my thoughts. --- Chris

2024 Tandem wing Fly-in.

Shortening the spring will increase the loads (dynamic) on and through the spring.
This does not mean that it will break anytime soon, but it will have a harder life than the previous arrangement and will be more prone to breaking.

Hi Chris, I hit a pothole with my bike while taxiing and the composite laminate at the start of the carrier broke off. The rear wheel holder itself is ok.Extending the last support of the laminate, however, seems quite demanding to me.Greetings MiranV V pon., 26. feb. 2024 ob 01:19 je oseba Dorothea Keats <dkeats@...> napisala:

Miran------ First, what broke the tail wheel? Is it the spring that comes with the kit or is it homebuilt. If it broke after years and you hit something real hard, then if it is shortened it will be less prone to flexing, so I would shorten it before replacing.
Just my thoughts---- Chris

Hi Chris, I'm thinking about this too, would that be good enough?
Greetings MiranV V ned., 25. feb. 2024 ob 18:13 je oseba Dorothea Keats <dkeats@...> napisala: -
Miran--------- Would you not be able to shorten the existing spring and then refit the tail wheel? That is what one of the Q guys has done and it seems to work.

Mine broke during shipping from Kauai to Los Angeles. This is a great time to install a full castoring tailwheel. Makes it way easier to handle on the ground. My repair had a staggered multi layered CF leaf spring type of layup. No photos. My tail wheel is probably now the strongest part of the plane.N39XD

Thanks for the reply, I would appreciate it if you could send me your picture and the repair process and the material you used.
Thank you and best regards MiranV V ned., 25. feb. 2024 ob 12:57 je oseba One Sky Dog via groups.io <Oneskydog=aol.com@groups.io> napisala: -
Hi, I also broke my tail spring. This is not an easy repair but I modified mine to be replaceable and spread the stresses over a greater part of the spring. I just made a photo album overview of the process. This came in handy because during the recovery of my Dragonfly after my forced landing the spring was broken again. I was able to remove the broken spring and make a replacement with minimal effort.

Hello, does anyone have an idea how to rehabilitate the epoxy laminate with a broken tail wheel.I am attaching a photo, thanks for the answers and best regards, Miran

Never flew the Dfly across the gap but went with friends to fly sailplanes at Dillingham. That was a hoot. That is where I learned the term "sucker hole" in the clouds.

Did you ever take the trip to Oahu? 97 miles of "automatic ruff" as my WW2 pilot friend told me once. He learned to fly on Oahu. I told him I imagine the mind would play tricks on a pilot..look down when over open water and see things that will eat you! I never flew when I was there in a light aircraft. Too much time fixing up the condo. Anyway..it was a good memory and I don't regret it at all. I hope your Dragonfly is purchased by a person that realizes all the value it has.
Please keep us informed who that might be so we can offer a hands up on any needs.
My wife and I went to OnoChar burgers and it was great to see they still are in business. Domi who is the lead performer in Kalamaku on the Plantation was one of the first people that I was taken in as Ohana. His brother-in-law owns OnoChar. Domi told me once he likes Germans because we fixed a lot of things and then left. I said that is true! I understand and agree. I learned Omar his pig was killed by a pit bull which was sad because Omar was as gentle as could be.
Smiles.. Aloha is good

Thank you for those kind words Vern. I flew from Lihue to Hanalei Bay many times flying off my hours. It quickly became apparent that even at a reduced power setting I had to do S turns all the way up the coast so I could put more than a few tenths on the HOBBS. One of my favorite memories was the three sunset ride at Hanalei Bay. Watch the first one at 3500, climb to 6500, watch the second, and then to 9500 for the third. Then nose down back to LIH before it got pitch black and you lost the horizon.Great memories.

I lived in Kauai County for a while also Tom. Not far fromCoconut Marketplace. We went back about a year agoand I was really disappointed in the traffic and what theState did at the beaches North side.
I watched your videos of your flights. I have zero doubt the aircraft isall you say it is and more. A very nice example of the design I might say!
I might suggest you also post this notice on Canard Forum. There aremany composite savvy there and I have done some "stirring" of interest inthe Tandem Wing with my project. In fact..not long ago was a questionabout anyone in Southern California being proficient in Dragonfly.
I pointed them to Charlie Johnson simply because I did not know youwere in So Cal.
Anyway..might consider posting it there..and hopefully keep your Evil Baycommission for your next Island Life!
I hate being house building poor.. I'd be handing over the cash andbacking up the truck to load her up in a heartbeat.Vern and the Frankenbird in Oklahoma.
